Learn to say no and overcome perfectionism for mental freedom.

Hi guys! Welcome back. Are you filling up your scheduler out of obligation, looking at a weekend plan and thinking, "Man, I really don't want to go"? Or have you ever imagined this amazing masterpiece in your head, but couldn't even bring yourself to start because you're scared you won't do it perfectly? Today, I’ve brought stories from two people whose emotional and mental capacities are completely overloaded.

Our first story is from 'Friendship Dieter.'

"I’m terrible at saying no. I end up going to every single gathering—from high school reunions with people I’m not even close with, to drinks with acquaintances of acquaintances. Because of this, I have zero time to rest or invest in my own future. My bank account is hitting rock bottom, and I'm mentally exhausted from forcing a fake smile every weekend. I want to clean up my relationships, but I feel so pathetic because I lack the courage to be disliked."

Man... this is such a textbook struggle for young people caught in the "nice person syndrome." 'Dieter,' you absolutely do not need to be a good person to everyone. Forcing yourself to keep up with all these connections just to look popular might feel okay short-term. But over time, you’ll just end up comparing your life to theirs. Not only will it hit you hard financially, but it’s also going to completely drain you, both financially and mentally.

Relationships are just like cleaning your room. You have to throw away the things you don't use to make space for the things that actually matter. Practice saying no firmly. If someone leaves your life just because you said no, they were an investment bound to disappear anyway.

[Song 1] Billy Joel - 'Honesty'

Next up, 'Overthinking Express.'

"I have a really strong perfectionist streak. I want to prep for a contest and build my personal portfolio, but the fear of 'What if I can't do this perfectly?' blocks me from writing even the very first line. I end up delaying it until the absolute deadline, rushing through it, and beating myself up again. Starting is so terrifying. How do I break this vicious cycle?"

Wow, I genuinely thought this was my story for a second! People think they procrastinate because they're lazy, but in reality, it’s usually perfectionism—wanting to do too well—that stops them from starting. They just hate the idea of facing their own imperfect side.

But 'Express,' getting trapped in perfection and forcing yourself to make grandiose plans might give you a temporary illusion of productivity short-term. But if you keep overthinking without producing anything, you’ll just end up more disappointed in yourself and mentally paralyzed. In times like this, you need the 'courage to do a messy job.' Just start with the mindset, "I'm going to finish this, even if it's a total train wreck." Nothing is perfect from the get-go. You build quality by revising and fixing. Just throw yourself into it! You got this!

[Song 2] Sabrina Carpenter - 'Please Please Please'

The courage to clear out meaningless connections from your life, and the courage to drop the pressure of perfection from your head... at the end of the day, making our lives lighter and happier comes down to the practice of letting go. Tonight, just like emptying out a packed bag, dump all your mental baggage and get some light, peaceful rest.

See you next episode. Bye!

  1. Billy Joel - 'Honesty’

This is Billy Joel's timeless classic. Just like the powerful message behind 'Honesty' being so hard to find, it reminds us that having just one genuine connection is far more valuable than keeping up a huge network of shallow acquaintances. If you listen to it on your way home from an empty night out, this classic track will really help you feel grounded again. I’d love for you to check out the lyrics to this song as well

  1. Sabrina Carpenter - 'Please Please Please'

A timeless masterpiece by Billy Joel. Echoing the weight of the lyric that honesty is so rare, it reminds us that one true connection matters far more than dozens of superficial ones. Listening to this on your way back from a hollow gathering will keep you grounded. Make sure to look up the lyrics too.
